The UN calls for an investigation into the alleged death of dozens of Afghan migrants on the border with Iran

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has demanded the launch of a “thorough and transparent” investigation into the alleged death of dozens of Afghan migrants who were shot in an area bordering Iran.

“UNAMA calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged incident and reminds all parties that the rights of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are protected under international law,” he added.

The deputy spokesman for the Taliban regime, Hamdullah Fitrat, has also reported on his social networks that the Afghan authorities have arranged “a high-ranking delegation” whose main mission is to carry out a “detailed investigation” into what happened.

“This delegation has worked uninterruptedly yesterday, last night and today, and is trying to discover the truth of the matter as soon as possible and clarify it to the citizens,” Fitrat stressed.

For his part, the Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, reported the day before that, after “direct monitoring” of the situation following the first information, the Iranian authorities have concluded that “the news about the death of dozens of illegal citizens at the Saravan border is not true.

The Iranian representative in Kabul has stressed that Iran reserves the right to prevent the illegal entry of irregular migrants, but has stressed that Tehran acts at all times “in a completely legal, responsible manner and based on a long-standing policy of good neighborliness, Islamic compassion and commitment to the provisions of international treaties.

The first information about this alleged event emerged on an Iranian website specialized in reporting on the humanitarian situation in the province of Sistan and Balochistan. The portal cited two eyewitnesses to report the death of some 260 Afghan migrants after being shot by Iranian border guards.
