June 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations has asked this Wednesday to investigate the death of Palestinian doctors after they were allegedly tortured in Israeli prisons, where they had been transferred after their arrest within the framework of Israel’s operations in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gazan authorities.
“We want this death to be thoroughly investigated. We strongly oppose the mistreatment, harassment and, in some cases, the death of medical workers and professionals,” said the deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, during a news conference.
The day before, the Government of Gaza, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), reported the death of two doctors – Adnan al Barsh and Iyad al Rantisi – after having been subjected to electric shocks and other forms of torture. The authorities recalled that Israel is holding 310 health workers in its prisons, where they are “under torture”, which is why they called for an international investigation.
The Israeli Army began an offensive against the Gaza Strip in response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, which left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. Since then, Gazan authorities have reported the deaths of nearly 37,400 Palestinians, plus another 520 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem due to the actions of Israeli security forces and settlers.
