President Joe Biden’s government took concrete steps this Tuesday to counter the actions of human smugglers who take advantage of migrants as they pass through the Darien Gap trying to reach the United States.
Operations against human trafficking are carried out by the Joint Task Force Alphaan entity under the supervision of the US Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, created in 2021 but focused especially on operations from Mexico.
Rewards
This Tuesday the government of The US announced the offering of rewards for a total value of up to $8 million for information leading to the capture of human traffickers linked to the Gulf Cartel and who use the Darien Gap as their area of operations.
The largest amount of the reward is for information that helps in the capture of cartel leaders who encourage foreigners to illegally emigrate to the United States using the dangerous Darien jungle route.
Bill
In a informational pagethe Department of Justice announces that it sent Congress a legislative proposal that suggests increasing penalties for the most active and dangerous human traffickers.
The legislative proposal is titled ‘Deterring Human Smuggling and Harm to Victims Act of 2024′, and suggests increasing penalties when traffickers’ actions result in “injury or death to more than one person.” In addition, it contemplates the possibility of exponentially increasing sentences depending on the number of migrants involved.
Expand Alpha Force
The third measure lies in the expansion of the Joint Task Force Alpha, now with incidents in Panama and Colombia.
“The actions taken today to expand the reach of Joint Task Force Alpha will lead to more arrests, indictments and convictions of traffickers, support our efforts to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and help protect migrants from those who seek to exploit them for profit. financial,” said Kristie Canegallo, acting undersecretary of Homeland Security.
