The Sudanese Army announces the "desertion" of a senior paramilitary commander in Gezira

MADRID 20 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sudanese Army has announced that a prominent commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left the group’s ranks after commanding an offensive in Gezira state for months.

The “deserter”, as the Army calls him, has been identified as Abu Aqla Kakil, who this Sunday chose “the side of justice and the country” by deciding, along with an unspecified number of subordinates, to leave the RSF.

The offensive in Gezira is a key front in the war in central Sudan. The state has been the scene of bloody fighting since December, when the RSF, in response, they say, to a military surge, decided to launch a large-scale attack in a place where hundreds of thousands of people had fled to escape the war. in other parts of the country.

Sudanese military sources on condition of anonymity have detailed to the ‘Sudan Tribune’ that Kakil surrendered to the Sudanese Army in the Abaitor mountains, Gezira, after an operation supervised by the Sudanese command in the area and after intense negotiations with tribal notables and even relatives of the “deserter”, who has received an amnesty if he joins the fight against his former comrades.

On the other hand, and in statements to the same medium, anonymous sources from the RSF have downplayed the desertion and assured that Kakil left his position “along with a few companions” whom they described as “traitors” whose departure will not affect the course of the his offensive.
