The secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, assured this Monday that the Russian Armed Forces have sufficient weapons capacity to be able to “destroy any adversary”.
“Russia is patient and does not intimidate anyone with its military advantage. But it has unique modern weapons capable of destroying any adversary, including the United States, if its existence is threatened,” Patrushev said, according to the Interfax news agency.
In this way, the senior official has responded to certain US politicians who, according to him, are “captives” of the North American country’s own “propaganda” that suggests that Russia does not have the capacity to respond to a hypothetical preventive nuclear attack.
“For some reason (…) they remain confident that in the event of a direct conflict with Russia, the United States is capable of launching a pre-emptive missile strike, after which Russia will no longer be able to respond. This is short-sighted stupidity and very dangerous,” he said.
The Russian nuclear doctrine argues that the use of nuclear weapons by the country is possible if the enemy uses this or other types of weapons of mass destruction against Russia and its allies, or in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened, among other reasons.
