Russia attacks Ukrainian territory practically every night with dozens of Shahed kamikaze drones, a relatively cheap technology received from Iran capable of reaching distances of more than a thousand kilometers.
Ukrainian defenses intercept the vast majority of these drones, which however continue to cause casualties and material damage by directly impacting infrastructure or homes or by fragments of the downed devices falling on them.
Russia urges end to war
After the victory in the USA of donald trumpEuropean leaders meeting this Thursday in Budapest urged the president-elect to maintain support for Ukraine.
For his part, the secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigusaid this Thursday that The West should accept that Russia was winning the Ukrainian war and negotiate its end.
Moscow’s forces have been advancing at their fastest pace since the first weeks of the two-and-a-half-year war.
Trump promised during the campaign that could bring peace to Ukraine in 24 hoursbut gave few details about how he would attempt to do so.
Shoigu, an ally of President Vladimir Putin who had been defense minister from 2012 until Putin fired him in May, said The West had tried to use Ukraine to inflict a strategic defeat on Russiabut he had failed.
Last June 14 Putin set out his conditions for ending the war: Ukraine would have to abandon its NATO membership ambitions and withdraw its troops from all four regions claimed by Moscow.
Russia controls Crimeawhich unilaterally took and annexed Ukraine in 2014, about 80% of Donbas-a coal and steel producing area that includes the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk– and more than 70% of the regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson.
Ukrainewhich has the backing of the United States and European powers, rejected Putin’s conditions, but Trump has stressed that has different priorities than Joe Biden, who has insisted that Ukraine must decide when and how to negotiate.
kyiv’s official position is that it will not rest until all Russian soldiers are expelled from its territory.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s transition team had proposed that kyiv could promise not to join NATO for 20 yearsThis is in exchange for Washington agreeing to heavily arm it to deter a Russian attack.
The Kremlin reacted cautiously on Wednesday after Trump won the presidential election, saying that The United States remained a hostile state and that only time would tell if his rhetoric about the end of the war translated into reality.
