The remaining silos that were left standing in the northern part of the port of Beirut have completely collapsed this Tuesday after registering several collapses since last July due to a fire in the port infrastructure of the Lebanese capital.

The silos, almost 50 meters high and fifty years old, have been falling during the summer as a result of the repeated flames produced inside them by the fermentation of the accumulated grain.

These structures, which protected the western part of the city after the huge 2020 explosion in the port, had been at risk of collapsing for months, so the Lebanese authorities announced last Wednesday the demolition of the silos in the northern part. , according to the news portal L’Orient le Jour.

Previously, the Government decided in April to demolish the silos, although the decision was suspended due to protests by the families of the victims, who argued that they could contain useful evidence in the ongoing investigation, marked by paralysis and political and judicial obstacles. .

The devastating explosion of August 4, 2020 in the port of Beirut, with hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate stored inside, left more than 200 dead and enormous material damage in and around the area.

The country has been mired in a crisis for years, a situation deepened by the explosion in Beirut, the coronavirus pandemic and the situation at the political level, with tensions that have caused months of political paralysis.
