EU to deploy election observers to Kenyan elections in August

BRUSSELS, July 1 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The plenary session of the Committee of the Regions (CdR) of the EU has adopted this Friday a resolution on the Conference on the Future of Europe in which it calls for a review of the EU Treaties that involves this body in the functioning of the EU.

The text argues that a revision of the EU treaties should lead to greater participation of local and regional levels in decision-making so that the EU is more democratic and closer to its citizens.

On May 9, the citizen debates of the Conference on the Future of Europe ended, after which the CoR, in a plenary session, adopted a resolution that supports the call to establish a Convention to review the treaties and implement decisions to promote the role of local and regional authorities.

The new president of the CoR, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, pointed out three lessons to be drawn from the Conference on the Future of Europe: “the need to motivate citizens to participate, empower their active role and ensure that there is accountability to show concrete changes.

For his part, the first vice-president of the CoR, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, added that “regional and local leaders are ready to assume their responsibility to improve the lives of our European citizens and leaders”.

The CoR resolution urges the creation of a permanent mechanism to promote dialogue with citizens and supported by local authorities, as well as to improve inter-institutional synergies that involve the body in the work of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.
