June 6 () –
The Prime Minister of Ireland, Simon Harris, met this Thursday for the first time with the Palestinian ambassador in Dublin, Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, to whom he indicated that formally recognizing Palestine as a State “is not the end of the process but the beginning” .
Ireland recognized Palestine on May 28, in a joint movement with Spain and Norway. Until this Thursday, no Irish head of government had received a Palestinian representative as ambassador, as the Government highlighted in a statement released at the end of the meeting.
Harris has considered it “imperative” to move towards a two-state solution and, although he has been “clear” in his condemnation of the Hamas attacks and has demanded the release of the hostages, he has also assessed that there is a ceasefire as “urgent” in the Gaza Strip and “full” access for humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, he announced that “Ireland will intensify its work with Arab and European partners to support the Arab vision of peace and take concrete steps to implement the two-state solution.”
For her part, the Palestinian ambassador thanked the Irish gesture with the recognition and pointed out that this common initiative with Spain and Norway was a reason for “strength, hope and light” in the search for peace. Now, “the country is at a different level in international perception,” she noted.
