The President of Sri Lanka considers it inappropriate for Rajapaksa to return to the country and fears an increase in tension

Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has expressed this Monday that he considers it inappropriate for former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to return to the country for the time being and has indicated that this could cause an increase in tension after months of protests against the Government due to the serious economic crisis that the island is going through.

“I don’t think it’s time to return, although I haven’t had any indications that he intends to do so anytime soon,” Wickremesinghe was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

Thus, he recalled that the country has gone through one of its worst economic crises and that restoring political stability will allow progress, a path that begins with dialogue with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“I think we have already hit rock bottom,” Wickremesinghe lamented, noting that, however, he already sees “the light at the end of the tunnel.” “The question will be how quickly we get out of it,” she said.

Likewise, he has admitted that there are months left for the majority of Ceylonese, who are facing the consequences of high inflation, to see improvements at the economic level.

Rajapaksa left the country on a military plane on July 13 and landed in the Maldives, where the population took to the streets to reject his arrival and show their support for the Sri Lankan people. Subsequently, he has traveled to Singapore, from where he officially sent his resignation.
