The Polisario Front asks the UN to "assume its responsibilities" for the decolonization of the Sahara

July 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Gali, this Sunday asked the UN to “assume its responsibilities” to carry out the decolonization of “the last African colony”, Western Sahara, from the “brutal Moroccan military occupation”.

“It is time for the UN to honor the principles for which it was created: preserving peace and establishing justice is the only way to restore the credibility of the Saharawi people in international institutions”, Gali assured the United Nations in statements collected by the SPS news agency.

The Saharawi leader has claimed that the question of Western Sahara should be resolved “exclusively” through the right to self-determination and independence.

In addition, he stressed that since the creation of the United Nations in 1945, more than 80 colonies have become independent and that the Sahara is “the last colony in Africa.”

MOROCCAN THREAT TO REGIONAL STABILITY

On the other hand, Gali has warned about the “aggressive policies” of Morocco, which pose a “threat to the security and stability of the peoples of the region.”

“We must alert against the aggressive policies of the Moroccan occupation State to the security and stability of the peoples and countries of our region”, declared the Saharawi president.

“Not to mention that Morocco encourages drugs and supports organized crime gangs and terrorist groups in the Sahel region,” he added during his speech.

The former Spanish colony was occupied by Morocco despite the resistance of the Polisario Front, with whom it remained at war until 1991, when both parties signed a ceasefire with a view to holding a referendum on self-determination, but differences over the elaboration of the census and the inclusion or not of Moroccan settlers has so far prevented its call.

On November 14, 2020, the Polisario Front declared the ceasefire with Morocco broken in response to a Moroccan military action against Saharawi activists in Guerguerat, in the agreed demilitarized zone, which meant for the Saharawis a violation of the conditions of the Stop the fire.

The Saharawi independentistas suffered a setback when the Spanish government supported the Moroccan autonomy plan, a change of position on the matter and which was described as treason by the Polisario Front and which also sparked criticism from Algeria considering their statements “an individual and biased by the Sánchez government”.
