The origins of the ELN, the armed group that sows violence in the Colombian Catatumbo

The Guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) is sowing violence and terror in the Catatumbo region, a border territory with Venezuela that is rich to produce coca and a key step for cocaine traffic. The ELN is one of the historical and most complex guerrillas in Colombia. With origins in the influences of the Cuban Revolution and the theology of liberation, this group opposed drug trafficking for decades and maintained a war against the Colombian State, without achieving any peace agreement. However, in recent years it has become a binational armed group, due to its strong presence in Venezuela, and has begun to traffic with cocaine and to practice illegal mining.
