“On Wednesday, January 9, at 8:50 a.m. (local time) punctually, I, Venancio Mondlane, will be at the Mavalane International Airport (Maputo). I will be in Mozambique. And I want to invite the president himself to be present,” the opponent has revealed in a video published on his profile on the social network Facebook.

Furthermore, he assured that “what had to be done outside of Mozambique” so that the demonstrations could be organized and advance “were organized and advanced.” “I did not leave Mozambique out of fear. (But) they are killing our brothers,” he stated, after stating that 400 fatalities have been recorded in the protests, while “hundreds” more are missing.

Mondlane has maintained that this is a “silent genocide” that is taking place in demonstrations that began as vandalism, became insurgency and ended up as “terrorism.” However, he has defended that “the people rebel because they are extremely angry because a genocide is taking place” and is not limited to “a small post-electoral conflict.”

“If they want to take possession, they will do so on this canvas of blood of these heroes. (…) They are killing my brothers, they are kidnapping them, they are spilling blood, they are leaving widows, they are leaving orphans,” he lamented, criticizing that hold him responsible for the violence.

In the video, Mondlane has also launched accusations against regional blocks such as the African Union, considering that “there are international institutions, such as the European Union and the United States, that are more sensitive to the issue of Mozambique.” “A tragedy is happening in Mozambique, a kind of silent genocide. In this sense, he pointed out that “it is urgent to intervene” in the country, but that “these organizations are losing certain relevance”, which is why “some countries even say that they will probably dissolve these organizations in the future.”

Tensions in the African country have not stopped growing after the electoral commission confirmed the victory of Chapo, candidate of the governmental Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), while Mondlane proclaimed himself the winner and assured that he was the elected president. calling for mobilizations against the Government.

Although the authorities have not provided a compiled tally of victims, the Mozambican NGO Plataforma Eleitoral Decide has confirmed the deaths of 278 people in the last two months.
