The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, Mahmud Yaqubu, has announced that the final tabulation of the results of the presidential elections has been delayed by six hours, until 6:00 p.m. this Sunday, amid the chaotic development of the elections. general elections in the African country throughout this weekend.
“We are awaiting the arrival of the tabulation managers from the different states, so now we are going to take a break to start the final count around 6:00 p.m.,” he has made known in an appearance from Abuja collected by the Nigerian newspaper ‘ Vanguard’.
The head of the commission has recalled that it is the culmination of a long four-level process that begins in the electoral colleges of the 8,800 constituencies of the country, distributed in 774 areas of Government, in turn distributed in the 36 states of the country.
“All the figures finally reach the capital, Abuja, where I will have the duty and privilege to make the final announcement once the count is complete,” Yaqubu said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police have warned Nigerians not to spread news of election results that the commission has not previously announced, Superintendent Olumuyiwa Adejobi has warned in a statement collected by the ‘Premium Times’ newspaper.
The Police, it has warned, “will consider the dissemination of news about electoral results not announced by the INEC as an attempt to ‘heat up’ the political environment and possibly create post-electoral chaos.”
“We have observed the dissemination or circulation of supposed/false election results on social networks and other news platforms, which is contrary to the policy and guidelines of the electoral commission. We consider this as prejudice, unpatriotic and disinformation,” he has indicated.
“Nigerian Police hereby advise those who are disseminating these alleged/false election results to desist from such malicious acts and patiently await the official results from the commission, which are authentic and verifiable,” it warned.
