April 19 () –
The new ambassador of Venezuela in Spain, Gladys Gutiérrez Alvarado, has presented the style copies at the Undersecretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, a prior step to going to the Royal Palace to present her letter of credentials to King Felipe VI.
The Embassy of Venezuela has published a message on the social network the sorrow.
Gutiérrez, who also served as Attorney General of the Republic during the mandate of Hugo Chávez between 2006 and 2011, was already in charge of the Venezuelan diplomatic headquarters in Spain as ambassador and consul general between 2002 and 2006.
The departure of her predecessor, Coromoto Godoy – appointed at the end of February as the new Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Europe – occurred just under a year after she presented her credentials to King Felipe VI.
The then appointment of Godoy, who previously served as chargé d'affaires in Spain, had marked a symbolic thaw in relations between Madrid and Caracas after several years of bilateral tensions.
Spain withdrew its ambassador from Caracas in November 2020 with the departure of Jesús Silva, to show its disagreement with the political situation in the country. However, in December 2022, the Spanish Government promoted the chargé d'affaires in Venezuela, Ramón Santos Martínez, to the category of ambassador.
