() — California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, called for a Presidential Declaration of Emergency on Thursday to support state and local responses amid a atmospheric River, which currently affects a large part of the state.
“California is deploying every tool we have to protect communities from the relentless and deadly storms that batter our state,” Newsom said. “In these dangerous and challenging conditions, it is crucial that Californians remain vigilant and follow all guidance from local emergency response teams.”
If approved, the emergency declaration would allow affected counties to immediately access federal assistance to help protect public safety and property, a statement from the Governor’s Office said. The request for federal assistance includes generators, highway cleaning crews, and possible shelter and mass care assistance.
