The foreign ministers of Iraq and Syria discuss better coordination in the face of new threats from the Islamic State

MADRID Dec. 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, held a telephone conversation this Monday with his counterpart in the new Syrian administration, Asaad Hasan al Shibani, in which they discussed security matters, in particular the recent movements of the Islamic State in the border between both countries.

During the call, the two ministers defended the need to preserve stability and security in both states, since they are “interconnected,” says a note published on the website of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

In this sense, Hussein has referred to the movements of members of the Islamic State near the common border, stressing the importance of improving cooperation and coordination to act against these threats.

For his part, Al Shibani has shown the willingness of the new authorities in Damascus to fully coordinate with the Iraqi Government against this terrorist organization and prevent it from threatening security on both sides of the border.

Islamic State has sought to take advantage of the security vacuum created by the fall of Syrian President Bashar al Assad in early December to gain control of territory, especially in desert regions near the Iraqi border that the former regime used to control loosely. , reports the Kurdish-Iraqi news agency Rudaw.
