The civil coalition Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), one of the main groups behind the demonstrations that ended with the departure from power in 2019 of the then president, Omar Hasan al Bashir, have announced a “framework agreement” with the Army to try to solve the crisis derived from the coup d’état of October 2022.
The Central Council of the FFC has unveiled a two-phase process to achieve a “credible and transparent” path to “put an end to the coup and its effects and complete the tasks of the glorious December Revolution”, in reference to the popular uprising against Al Bashir.
Thus, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), Yasir Arman, has highlighted in statements given to the Sudanese news portal Sudan Tribune, that the objective is to guarantee the participation of the “revolutionary forces” and Assemble a coalition that supports the necessary reforms.
“The ‘framework agreement’ includes all the necessary mechanisms to put an end to the coup and establish a democratic civil authority,” he said, before assuring that this agreement “will be signed in ten days” and adding that “the second phase involves the development of the agreement with the participation of a broad sector of the public and the revolutionary forces”.
This application will revolve around four main areas, including transitional justice, reform of the security apparatus and the Army, the peace agreement with the rebel groups of October 2020, and the completion of the “dismantling” process of the Al Bashir regime.
The confirmation of this “framework agreement” comes three days after the head of the Army and president of the Sovereign Transition Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, pointed to an “understanding” with the FFC in order to pave the way for a transfer of power. to civil authorities.
Al Burhan led a new coup in October 2021 that overthrew the transitional prime minister, Abdalá Hamdok, appointed after an agreement between the previous military junta, which emerged after the 2019 coup against Al Bashir, and various civil and opposition political formations.
This government had begun a battery of social and economic reforms and has reached a peace agreement with important rebel groups in Darfur and other parts of the country, although the process was slowed down by the new coup, criticized by the opposition and the international community. .
