BRUSSELS, June 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has valued this Monday the trip of a delegation of leaders of African countries to Ukraine and Russia to try to mediate in the conflict, but has indicated that the “only” formula that guarantees a “fair and sustainable” peace is the one presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Speaking to Europa Press, the EU Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, welcomed the visit of seven African leaders headed by the South African leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, appreciating the “greater involvement of the African partners and their recognition that the Russian aggression against Ukraine has global consequences”. “The EU is ready to work with our African partners to find ways to mitigate these consequences,” he assured.

Specifically regarding the ten-point proposal presented by the African delegation, the EU stresses that it echoes the importance of respecting the United Nations Charter, which defends the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of countries.

However, the EU insists that Zelensky’s peace formula is the “only basis for achieving a just and sustainable peace.” “The EU position is clear: any initiative must be based on international law and the United Nations Charter, including the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” he said.

On his return to South Africa, Ramaphosa has described as “historic” that a delegation from seven African countries has presented his proposal to promote a peaceful solution to the conflict, although the route of the initiative to achieve progress towards a possible agreement is not clear. of peace.
