The European Union has denounced this Wednesday the attempt to “eradicate” the democratic opposition in Burma after the dissolution by the military junta of the National League for Democracy (NLD), headed by the arrested leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
“This decision is yet another example of the military regime’s blatant disrespect for democracy and the rights and wishes of the people of Burma and demonstrates the military regime’s determination to eradicate any peaceful and democratic opposition,” the Security Service said. EU External Action in a statement.
In this sense, community diplomacy, led by Josep Borrell, has stressed that the way out of the crisis in Burma, after the coup d’état that marks two years this week, goes through “an inclusive political process” in which the democratic political parties, civil society, religious leaders and minority and ethnic groups.
This process should pave the way for a “meaningful” democratic exercise that “truly reflects the will of the Burmese people and contributes to internal reconciliation.”
The military junta that governs Burma announced the dissolution of Suu Kyi’s party, after she failed to register for the upcoming elections, since, according to the official version, the NLD would not have submitted the necessary documentation on time.
The law approved in January by the board implies the automatic dissolution of the parties that do not conclude said registration, within measures that are called to increase the control of the current authorities over the entire political spectrum of the country.
