BRUSSELS, May 19. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union has condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the execution in Iran this Friday of three people convicted of the murder of three agents during the protests over the death of the young Mahsa Amini, while calling for the “immediate cessation ” of this type of punishment against protesters.
For the External Action Service of the European Union, directed by Josep Borrell, it is a “reprehensible practice”, given that the authorities should be advancing towards abolition. The EU opposes “at all times and circumstances” the death penalty, a “cruel and inhuman” punishment that makes any judicial malpractice “irreversible”.
The latest executions have killed Mayid Kazemi, Salé Mirhashemi and Said Yaqubi, all sentenced to hang for the deaths of three members of the security forces in a “terrorist attack” in the city of Isfahan in November. The UN estimates that Iran has executed more than 200 people so far this year.
The EU has reminded the Iranian authorities in its statement that they must comply with their “obligations” under International Law, which involves respecting “in all circumstances” the “fundamental rights” of citizens, including those of expression and assembly .
