The EU condemns the "atrocities" of the Burmese Army on the day of the Armed Forces

BRUSSELS, March 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has condemned this Monday the “atrocities” committed by the Burmese Army in the internal repression of the country, coinciding with the party of the Armed Forces in the Southeast Asian country and days after the second anniversary of the coup that established a military junta in the country.

“The EU remembers that the main duty of every Army is to protect its citizens,” said the EU’s Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, in a message on social networks in which he stressed that the Twenty-seven condemned “the atrocities committed by the Burmese Army against its own people”.

At the same time, Stano has asked the uniformed officers, responsible for a coup against democracy on April 1, 2021, to “restore stability and democracy with a legitimate civilian government.”

The EU maintains sanctions against a total of 93 individuals and 18 entities for their role in the February 2021 military coup and subsequent violence against peaceful protesters. More than half a million members of ethnic minorities in Burma have had to flee their homes due to the escalation of the conflict and the recent wave of bombardments by the Army against populations in states such as Kayin, in the south, and Rakhine, in the west.
