BRUSSELS, June 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union has announced a contribution of 750 million euros to contribute to the African Vaccine Production Accelerator (AVMA), which aims to improve the control and predictability of vaccines that can be manufactured on the African continent.
The funds, mainly obtained from national contributions but also including 220 million from community coffers, seek to enhance the sustainable growth of African manufacturing capacity and contribute to ensuring that most of the vaccines needed in Africa are produced there.
The European Commission hopes that the accelerator will make it possible to purchase more than 800 million doses produced in Africa over the next decade and also improve the capacity to react to pandemics or epidemics, as well as contribute to global health security.
As Brussels emphasizes in a statement, supporting vaccine production and promoting equitable access to essential health products, technologies and primary care services are an opportunity to achieve several development objectives and common geopolitical priorities for the EU and the African Union.
