The EU approves 110 million to support the Somali Army and the African Union mission in Somalia

BRUSSELS, March 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Member States of the European Union have approved on Thursday 110 million to support the modernization of the Somali Army and the African Union mission in Somalia.

Under the European Peace Mechanism, the 27 will dedicate 85 million to provide more resources for the troops of the African Union mission deployed in 2023, so that they can better fulfill their mandate.

While 25 million will go to the Somali Army seeking to strengthen their means and resources. The aid includes non-lethal material and infrastructure work and is in addition to the 20 million mobilized by the European bloc in 2021.

The EU is the main contributor to the African Union forces in Somalia and has earmarked 2.4 billion euros since 2007, in what Brussels sees as a long-term commitment to consolidate the gains made in stabilizing the country.
