The President of Egypt, Abdelfatá al Sisi, and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, discussed on Wednesday the state of their bilateral relations, the war in Sudan and the negotiations around the Grand Renaissance Dam, located on the river Blue Nile.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency, Ahmed has been received at the Presidential Palace in Cairo, where the ‘Sudan Neighboring Countries Summit’ is taking place this Thursday, which seeks to discuss ways to end the current conflict, its repercussions on the neighboring countries, and the development of effective mechanisms with the participation of neighboring countries”.
The Egyptian authorities have pointed out that “in order to resolve the crisis in Sudan peacefully” it is necessary to coordinate with “other regional and international channels”.
The meeting also discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries and the issue of the Renaissance dam, as indicated in the letter.
Ahmed, who has been “delighted to have met”, has asserted that the talks have been marked by the “spirit of cooperation on bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest”.
Egypt and Ethiopia, which share a border with Sudan, have been in conflict over the construction of the aforementioned dam. The governments of these three countries reached an agreement in principle on the main points of dispute around infrastructure in January 2020, but Addis Ababa left the talks before signing the agreement.
