President Joe Biden issued an executive order to temporarily close the border to asylum seekers if more than 2,500 migrants a day are detected crossing irregularly into the United States. Biden regrets that Republicans have opposed a bipartisan initiative to reform the immigration and asylum system. “Today I am overcoming Republican obstruction and using the executive authority I have at my disposal as president to do what I can on my own to address the border situation. “Frankly, I would have preferred to address this issue through bipartisan legislation,” Biden said.
The leader of the Republicans in the House, Mike Johnson, believes that a law was not necessary to act on the border. “126 days ago, Biden was asked why he didn’t use his broad executive authority to address the border catastrophe of his own making. 126 days ago, he looked into the cameras and said I have no options, I’ve done everything I can do,” Johnson assured.
From 2021 to the end of 2023, the Department of Homeland Security has returned nearly 4 million migrants to Mexico, or their countries of origin. However, another 2.3 million were allowed to remain on American soil. While immigration stirs up the political debate in the United States and the White House implements restrictions on the southern border. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that migration will generate an additional $7 trillion for the economy over the next 10 years, after including the recent migration flow in its calculations.
