The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammyargued this Thursday that the fight against irregular immigration is “progressive”, because it implies confronting “some hard truths” and “accept reality as it is, and not as we would like it to be.”

Lammy offered a speech at his ministry headquarters to outline the guidelines of british diplomacy under his command and the new sanctions regime that will be applied to human traffickers, which London presented as the first of its kind in the world, reports Efe.

“Our foreign policy has changed (…). Progressive realism is accepting reality as it is and not as we would like it to be. “In Europe it means working with our neighbors, rather than isolating ourselves, on defense, on immigration, to create a new dialogue with European partners as the first step towards a security pact with the EU,” he said.

Before representatives of British diplomacy and journalists, the minister also assured that his doctrine of progressive realism also implies “not allowing the mafia state of (the Russian president, Vladimir) Putin acts with impunity“.

Likewise, his ministry’s roadmap contemplates a policy of “consistency, not isolation” with China, to continue the “pragmatic commitment” with the Asian power on issues such as climate, the regulation of artificial intelligence or the trade.

Lammy similarly advocated for greater attention to the Global South to establish a new cooperative relationship in which they are “show more respect”and defended the Executive’s intention to increase military spending, as demanded by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trum.
