The inmate who was holding five employees of the Arles prison (in western France) since this morning has surrendered to the authorities and all his hostages have been released without any injuries to report.

The Police Chief of the municipality of Bouche-du-Rhône, Pierre-Édouard Colliex, appeared before the media to announce “that things have gone well” after five hours of negotiation and that the hostages are already receiving psychological care.

The prisoner had four members of the prison’s medical staff and a prison officer under his control, as confirmed shortly after the incident began by the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, through his account on the social network X.

The prisoner, who cornered the hostages with a homemade knife, “wanted to get out of prison,” Colliex added in this regard.

Darmanin also confirmed the end of the kidnapping on the same platform. “The kidnapper was arrested immediately and without injuries. Thanks to the prison administration teams and police officers for their intervention,” he indicated.

Sources from the BFMTV network identify the kidnapper as a 37-year-old inmate imprisoned since 2015 for rape at gunpoint, who was going to be released in 2031. The individual, according to the same sources, presented an “unstable” psychiatric condition.
