Follow live the latest news on Iran's attack on Israel
April 16 () –
The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, conveyed this Tuesday to his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, the need to “remain calm” at a time when an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East would benefit no one.
In a phone call, Sunak reiterated the United Kingdom's “firm support” for Israel and assessed that Iran made a “serious miscalculation” with its large-scale attack last weekend. Tehran, he has said, is “increasingly isolated on the world stage.”
However, the British Prime Minister has stressed to the Israeli Prime Minister that an exchange of attacks of this nature “is of no benefit to anyone and will only deepen insecurity in the Middle East.”
“It is a time for calm to prevail,” remarked Sunak, who has also conveyed to Netanyahu the “concern” that exists within the British Government about the “deep” humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
“The UK wants to see a radical change in access to aid to fill Gaza with vital supplies, including Israel opening new aid routes as quickly as possible,” 10 Downing Street reported.
