Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council leader survives assassination attempt that leaves five dead

Jul 31. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sudanese army leader and president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, survived an assassination attempt on Wednesday when at least one drone crashed in the town of Jebet, in the northeast of the country, where he was attending a military graduation ceremony.

This was reported by the local press, which cited military sources to confirm that Al Burhan had emerged unharmed. The Sudanese Armed Forces, meanwhile, confirmed on their Facebook account that the ceremony had been the target of “two hostile attacks” that had left five dead and several slightly injured.

Hours earlier, the army itself had shared on its social networks images of Al Burhan during the ceremony in Jabit, located in the Red Sea state. This is the first time that this area has suffered an attack since the outbreak of fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war broke out after sharp disagreements between the army and the RSF over the integration of the paramilitary group into the armed forces, which derailed the transition process that began after the overthrow in 2019 of former Omani President Hassan al-Bashir after 30 years in power.

Mediation efforts launched in recent months have not been successful and the situation on the ground remains tense. Currently, both sides are engaged in fighting in which the army has recently made some progress after months of victories by the RSF.

The conflict has also caused what is already considered the largest displacement crisis in the world: 7.7 million people have had to leave their homes since April 2023, according to the International Organization for Migration (WHO).
