Sudanese authorities impose curfew in Khartoum over security concerns

May 14. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sudanese authorities have imposed a curfew this Monday in the country’s capital, Khartoum, due to the “current conditions that the state is experiencing and to preserve the lives and property of citizens”, all within the framework of the fighting between the Sudanese Army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Othman Hamza, has issued the order establishing the prohibition of any activity (including shops or catering establishments) from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (local time) within the geographical borders of the state.

“Stipulates the powers of the security forces and the Prosecutor’s Office, which must work to implement and enforce this order, confiscating means of transportation that are suspected of violating this order, until the investigation is completed, and prohibits and regulates the movement of people and their activity,” reads a statement collected by the Sudanese news agency SUNA.

The text includes the arrest of suspects and the search of places suspected of violating said order. It also stipulates, in addition to the penalties provided by law, imprisonment of no more than six months or a fine of no more than one million Sudanese pounds (1,500 euros). “In the event of a repeat violation, the penalty will be doubled,” he concluded.

The war broke out on April 15, 2023 due to strong disagreements regarding the integration process of the paramilitary group within the Armed Forces, a situation that caused the definitive derailment of the transition that opened in 2019 after the overthrow of the regime. Omar Hasan al Bashir.
