Sudanese activists and paramilitaries denounce at least 59 dead in a military bombing in Darfur

MADRID 5 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Between 59 and 70 people would have died and more than 200 would have been injured as a result of a bombing carried out last Friday by the Sudanese Army on a market in the city of Al Kuma, in the western region of North Darfur, according to both the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and local activists to the newspaper ‘Sudan Tribune’.

The attack, according to activists, took place during one of the busiest times of the day at the market. Activist Abdel-Rahman Mustafá denounced to the Sudanese media that the attack “was specifically directed against innocent civilians and resulted in the total destruction of the market and several nearby homes.”

For its part, the RSF has raised the number of deaths to 70 through a statement published on its social network account who has not yet commented on what happened.

Since the middle of this week, several regions in the north and northwest of North Darfur state have witnessed violent clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces. These clashes are an extension of the fighting that has taken place in the city of El Fasher, the state capital, since last March.

Sudan is mired in a civil war following hostilities that broke out in April 2023 within the framework of increased tensions over the integration of the RSF within the Armed Forces, a key part of a signed agreement in December 2022 to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition opened after the 2019 overthrow of Omar Hasan al Bashir, damaged by the coup d’état of October 2021, in which the then transition minister, Abdullah Hamdok, was overthrown. .
