Sudan charges against the EU after its criticism of the Armed Forces in the context of the fighting with the RSF in Darfur

He reproaches the EU for accusing the Army of launching “indiscriminate attacks” in El Fasher and “equating” it with “a terrorist militia”

May 16. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sudanese authorities have rejected this Thursday the accusations made by the European Union (EU) against the Armed Forces in the context of the fighting in recent weeks around the city of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, within the framework of the war unleashed in April 2023 with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has criticized the EU for accusing the Armed Forces of carrying out “indiscriminate attacks” and for “equating them with a terrorist militia”, before stating that “the EU was unable to name the terrorist militia that “attacks El Fasher, civilians and displaced persons camps.”

“The EU, instead of calling on the aggressor to stop the aggression, involves the forces that defend the city and its population in its condemnation,” he stated, before accusing the bloc of “ignoring the fact that the regions and cities “Not affected by the attacks of this terrorist militia enjoy peace.”

Thus, he has stated that “the militia brings death, devastation and a humanitarian crisis” and has defended that the Army is a “symbol of sovereignty” and “the main national institution in the country”, as reported by the Sudanese state agency news, SUNA.

“The EU also ignores the militia’s regional support, which provides it with weapons and mercenaries, allowing it to continue carrying out attacks against safe areas,” he pointed out, while maintaining that “it is clear that commercial interests of some EU countries that support the militia prevent it from condemning or putting pressure to stop the flames of war in Sudan.

Along these lines, he has denied that the Army is blocking the delivery of aid and has stated that “the insistence” of the European bloc in these statements “is suspicious.” “The EU does not adopt a correct moral position that allows it to contribute to stopping war and lectures others on humanitarian values and international law,” he concluded.

Khartoum has thus responded to the recent statements by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, who “strongly” condemned the “indiscriminate attacks from both sides” and were “extremely concerned” by the lack of medical supplies in the only functioning hospital in this Sudanese state.

“The intensification of fighting on the outskirts and inside El Fasher is aggravating an already catastrophic humanitarian situation and having a dramatic impact on civilians,” they stated, while maintaining that since the outbreak of the conflict the Army and the RSF have blocked the aid delivery, denying assistance to the hundreds of thousands of trapped civilians.

The war broke out on April 15, 2023 due to strong disagreements regarding the integration process of the paramilitary group – now declared a terrorist organization – within the Armed Forces, a situation that caused the definitive derailment of the transition opened in 2019 after the overthrow of the Omar Hasan al Bashir regime.
