June 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Sudanese Army has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday of kidnapping and executing the governor of Western Darfur, Jamis Abdalá Abkar.
“This monstrous behavior adds a new chapter to the barbaric crimes that they have been committing against the Sudanese people, who have seen their crimes as never seen in the country’s history,” reads a statement.
According to the Sudanese Armed Forces, “the betrayed governor was one of the heads of the armed groups that signed the Juba Peace Agreement.” They have also indicated that Abkar was appointed to his position “based on the agreement and has no relation to the conflict.” For the moment, the RSF has not commented.
The current hostilities between the Army and the paramilitaries broke out in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition open after the overthrow of al Bashir in 2019, damaged by the coup in October 2021, in which the prime minister of unity, Abdalá Hamdok, was overthrown.
