The activity was carried out from October 19 to 21 in the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Chile, the same body in charge of the day.
The School of Geometry: Spring in the Palm Trees is an activity organized by the Department of Mathematics through a Scientific and Organizing Board made up of Anita Rojas, Robert Auffarth and Sebastian Reyes. Teachers from both the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile participated in it, Technical University Federico Santa María and the University of the Border.
The objective of the School of Geometry was to provide instances of information, dialogue and exposure to students last year of a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and postgraduate (master’s and doctorate).
“The activity had a dual purpose. On the one hand, to present different lines of research within the area of Algebraic Geometry. On the other hand, that different postgraduate and final year undergraduate students, interested in Geometry, get to know each other and with different researchers, in order to get to know the community” indicated Anita Rojas, part of the organizing committee.
This was done through 5 courses of two sessions each, whose speakers and topics were: Robert Auffarth and Sebastián Reyes Carocca from the University of Chile with the topics: The Schottky Problem and “What is a Riemann Surface?” respectively.
On the other hand, from the Universidad de la Frontera, Paola Comparín spoke about Groups of automorphisms of surfaces k3. Natalia García Fritz from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile spoke about rational points on surfaces and lastly, Pedro Montero from the Federico Santa María Technical University, who carried out a introduction to vectorial bundles and positivity.
In addition, the day had a limited number of scholarships accommodation for students from outside Santiago, facilitating the stay of students from regions.
Thanks to this, students from Talca, Valparaíso, Temuco and Santiago attended, successfully ending the day. “The students participated enthusiastically, asking questions and interacting with each other. They were very intense but very satisfying days. We did a survey at the end and everyone agreed on how profitable and interesting the experience was,” said the academic.
Rojas also indicated that they intend to make this Postgraduate School a regular activity of the Department. That is, hold Spring Schools in different areas. In particular, in Geometry, noting that they are already thinking about the theme of Spring 2023.
It should be noted that applications are open for the Doctorate in Sciences, mention Mathematics, program belonging to the Department of Mathematics of the University of Chile, which this year offers a new development plan, along with improvements in infrastructure, bathrooms and pavilions, in addition to the accreditation acquired in 2018.
