() — “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” wove an impressive web in ticket office during the opening weekend of the “Into the Spider-Verse” sequel.
Opening on June 2, “Across the Spider-Verse” grossed $120.5 million in its three-day opening, making it the second-biggest opening of the year, behind the $146 million “The Spider-Verse.” Super Mario Bros. Movie” in its debut in April.
Running at two hours and twenty minutes, “Across the Spider-Verse”‘s opening weekend exceeded expectations by more than tripling the $35 million “Into the Spider-Verse” grossed during its 2018 opening .
“Into the Spider-Verse” was critically acclaimed and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards 2019.
The sequel’s box office numbers are also the biggest opening for a summer blockbuster, surpassing the $118 million grossed by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” from Marvel in May, and it is the third best opening weekend for a “Spider-Man” movieaccording to Sony.
The film follows Miles Morales, who is “catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People tasked with protecting the very existence of the Multiverse,” according to the synopsis.
When Morales finds himself “faced with the other Spiders” in the midst of a conflict over how to handle a new threat, he strikes out “on his own to save the ones he loves most.”
“Across the Spider-Verse” stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac.
