Somali security forces neutralize Al Shabaab terrorists who attacked a hotel

June 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Somali security forces have neutralized Al Sahabaab terrorists who attacked on Friday the Pearl Beach luxury hotel in Mogadishu, the country’s capital, and one of Mogadishu’s most popular entertainment venues, frequented by politicians and foreigners for its good food and nightlife.

Although there is still no number of deaths or injuries, the authorities have managed to rescue “a large number of civilians”, as published by the Somali news agency SONNA on its Twitter account.

An unknown number of armed men belonging to Al Shabaab attacked the Pearl Beach hotel on Friday after allegedly installing two bombs outside and exchanging fire with Somali security forces.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Mohamed Hasan Mohamed, as well as an emergency medical response team, have gone to the scene to provide assistance during the operation to neutralize the terrorists. Al Shabaab, in fact, has claimed responsibility for the attack, as reported by the SITE Intelligence Group, an organization specialized in monitoring terrorist groups.

In a separate incident, at least 27 people have been killed, including several children, and 53 injured after an explosion triggered by mortar debris in Qoryoley, some 120 kilometers south of the Somali capital.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
