A few days after remake From Until Dawn, PS5 and PC players receive Silent Hill 2, a survival horror originally released in 2001 that is brought back to life thanks to Bloober Team, the Polish studio behind Layers of Fear, Observer and The Medium. This is one of the many projects in the Silent Hill franchise, which also has Silent Hill f, a new installment set in Japan during the 60s, and the mysterious Silent Hill Townfall on the way. Additionally, the film Return to Silent Hill based on Silent Hill 2 is underway.

The story of Silent Hill 2 stars James Sunderland, who receives a letter from his wife Mary even though she died three years ago due to an illness. The woman asks him to go to Silent Hill, a place where they both shared many memories during the holidays, and James decides to listen to her in the hope of seeing her once again. When he arrives he discovers that Silent Hill has stopped being that special place and has transformed into a ghost city covered in dense fog. When James begins to look for clues to find Mery, he begins a journey “that will take him to a truth from which he will not be able to escape.”

Silent Hill 2 is considered a classic within the survival horrorso Bloober Team has addressed the remake with great respect and the objective of preserving the setting of the original work, which was one of the most outstanding aspects. What hasn’t aged so well have been some of the gameplay mechanics. In this sense, the Polish studio has decided to adopt an over-the-shoulder camera to increase player immersion and offer a more visceral experience. This change led to rebuilding the combat system to allow for a greater variety of approaches, but without forgetting that James is a normal person.

The renovation of the graphic section has been carried out with Unreal Engine, which takes advantage of technologies such as Lumen, a dynamic global illumination solution. Motion capture has also been used to implement better facial expressions. On the other hand, Bloober Team has decided to use new voices for technical and creative reasons, so it has hired Luke Roberts and Salóme Gunnarsdóttir to play James and Mary, respectively.

During the development of remake of Silent Hill 2, some doubted Bloober Team’s abilities to revive a classic of these characteristics. This concern is completely dispelled if we take into account that the game has an average score of 87 in Metacritic and 88 in OpenCritic. It seems that the remake Silent Hill 2 not only lives up to the original, but also improves exactly what it needed.
