April 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Senegalese authorities have announced the seizure of more than 1.1 tons of cocaine in an operation in Kidira (southeast), which is the largest land operation of this type in the history of the African country.
The Customs Service has specified in a statement published on its website that the seizure took place on Sunday and has added that a total of 1,137 kilograms of cocaine were intercepted in bags and packages “disguised in the double bottom of a refrigerated truck that arrived from a neighboring country”.
The truck, “apparently empty”, would have arrived from Mali, given that Kidira is located on the common border. The authorities have indicated that the seized drugs have a value of about 91 billion Central African francs (around 138.7 million euros) and have stressed that “the investigation is still active.”
“Customs units in the southeast continue to be mobilized to confront illicit trafficking with determination,” said the agency, which highlighted “the firm will” of Dakar when it comes to “fighting through all legal means against the cross-border organized crime and specifically against drug trafficking”.
The seizure is the largest carried out by land in Senegal, while in November 2023 the Navy intercepted three tons of cocaine on a boat off the country's coast, one of the largest operations by the authorities on its coasts.
