The Armed Forces of Senegal announced this Monday the rescue of 252 migrants who were on a boat off the coast of the capital of the African country, Dakar.

The Senegalese Navy has indicated that the ship left the town of Bargny, about 15 kilometers from Dakar, and was intercepted 30 kilometers from the capital during an operation coordinated by a high seas patrol.

“252 people from Senegal and the subregion have been rescued and handed over to the competent services,” reads a statement published on his profile on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

Journeys between the coast of Senegal and the Canary Islands are frequent, despite the fact that the Atlantic route, with strong currents and waves, is considered one of the most dangerous routes to Europe, although in 2023 it saw an increase in the number of movements.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 155 percent more arrivals to the Canary Islands compared to the previous year, with 15,680 arrivals compared to 39,910.
