9 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Algerian authorities have announced the death of two “terrorists” in an operation carried out by the army near the town of Jenchela (northeast), located near the border with Tunisia, without any details yet on which group they belonged to.
The Algerian Ministry of Defence said in a statement posted on its website that one of the deceased had been identified as Bugrara Murad, who “had joined terrorist groups in 2010.” “The identification of the second terrorist is still ongoing,” it said.
He also stressed that the operation also resulted in the seizure of two Kalashnikov assault rifles and “a quantity of ammunition,” before emphasizing that it “once again confirms the vigilance and determination of the Army units to pursue these criminals throughout the territory, until they are completely eradicated.”
Algeria announced last week the arrest of five suspected terrorists and the seizure of several weapons and magazines in the framework of two operations carried out in recent days in the towns of Bordj Badji Mojtar and Tamanrasset, in the south of the African country.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) — formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) and now part of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) — and the jihadist group Islamic State operate in the country, which is why Algerian forces have carried out dozens of anti-terrorist operations in recent months, mainly in the north of the country.
