Janice Small Combs defends her superstar son, Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The musician and producer is currently in federal custody while awaiting trial for his indictment in the Southern District of New York on charges of conspiracy to extort, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty.
Combs also faces multiple civil lawsuits accusing him of a variety of sexual misconduct and other illegal activities.
Janice Combs issued a statement Sunday through her attorney, who was shared on social networks.
“I come before you today as a devastated mother and deeply saddened by the allegations made against my son, Sean Combs,” her statement began.
“It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not by the truth, but by a narrative created from lies,” she wrote. “Witnessing what appears to be a public lynching of my son before he has had the opportunity to prove his innocence is a pain too unbearable for words.”
The case has put a spotlight on the music mogul’s alleged lifestyle away from the public eye. In their indictment, federal prosecutors cited alleged “Freak Offs,” Sean Combs’s name for elaborate sexual performances in which he is accused of drugging and coercing victims into prolonged sexual acts with male sex workers, beginning with 2009.
Janice Combs also addressed surveillance video obtained by celebrity.land that showed Sean Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, in 2016 at a Los Angeles hotel.
“My son may not have been completely truthful about certain things, such as denying that he ever became violent with an ex-girlfriend when hotel surveillance showed otherwise,” she wrote in her statement. “Sometimes truth and lies become so closely intertwined that it is terrifying to admit part of the story, especially when that truth is outside the norm or too complicated to believe.”
Sean Combs initially denied Ventura’s abuse allegations, which were included in a lawsuit she filed before the video became public. After the video was published, he apologized.
“I felt disgusted when I did it. I’m upset now. I went and sought professional help. “I started going to therapy, to rehabilitation.” combs said in a video shared on social media days after the video aired. “I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. Very sorry. But I am committed to being a better man every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. Very sorry”.
His mother wrote that she believes her son’s “civil legal team chose to settle the ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit rather than contest it to the end, resulting in a rebound effect as the federal government used this decision against my son.” by interpreting it as an admission of guilt.”
“It is important to recognize that none of us, regardless of our status, are immune to fear or mistakes,” he wrote. “Not being completely honest about an issue does not mean that my son is guilty of the repulsive accusations and serious charges against him.”
Last week, Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee, along with AVA Law Group, announced that they had been held by at least 120 additional men and women “bring cases in civil courts” against Combs.
