To commemorate that Spain has lived in democracy for 50 years, you only need one thing: to be a democrat. There is no more. Charging against the Government’s initiative to launch a program of events to commemorate the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, the recognition of freedoms and the memory of what Spain was and what it is today can only respond to three motivations: sectarianism , the ignorance or trivialization of some signs that threaten to bring us dangerously close to a past that we thought we had overcome.
Can it happen again? Can. “The fascism that we thought we left behind is now the third political force in Europe, the reactionary international led by the richest man on the planet attacks our institutions, incites hatred and openly calls to support the heirs of Nazism in Germany.” These are the words of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in reference to Elon Musk and his open call to support Alternative for Germany in the next elections that are difficult to refute. The exception, of course, is Vox and those who, out of resentment, conviction or electoral calculation, prefer to close their eyes to a devastating reality that 1933 syndrome (The Leopard), by Siegmund Ginzberg, would help them understand the risks that liberal democracies face today. A must read for what is to come.
