Russian authorities block access to Telegram's short links page

Oct. 29 () –

The Russian Federal Service for Telecommunications Supervision (Roskomnadzor) has announced the blocking of access to Telegram’s short links page, t.me, at the request of the Russian General Prosecutor’s Office.

The veto is based on Article 15.3 of the Information Law that regulates the restriction of access to information with calls for widespread disturbances and participation in unauthorized actions, extremism or access to dubious information that appears to be a reliable message, reports the agency of Russian news Interfax.

Interfax itself has sent a petition to Roskomnadzor requesting an explanation of the reason for blocking the page.

Telegram is a messaging application that allows you to distribute information through channels and personal accounts using mobile devices or computers.

It allows encrypted and direct communication between sender and recipient, without going through intermediate servers, which is why it is often used by activists.

The Russian authorities have imposed fines on the company for refusing to provide the encryption code for messages, revealing the participants of certain chats or refusing to withdraw documentation with information to carry out sabotage.
