The Russian government has confirmed this Thursday that the Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, will go in person to New York to give a speech before the United Nations General Assembly, after Moscow confirmed that the United States had given him a visa to facilitate the displacement.
The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zajarova, has said that Lavrov will speak before the General Assembly and will participate in around twenty bilateral meetings, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax. “These are the requests we have received so far,” she said.
“At the moment, work is being done on the minister’s agenda,” he noted, while revealing that the secretary general of the international organization, António Guterres, has presented a proposal to “hold a meeting with the Russian delegation.”
Likewise, Zajarova has emphasized that “Russia will defend its principled positions in the next session”, amid criticism of Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. “We will continue to advocate for the strengthening of the central and coordinating role of the UN in international affairs and strict respect for its charter”, she has settled.
Sources from the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated on Tuesday that Lavrov and part of his delegation had received the relevant visas to be able to travel to New York, before adding that Moscow hopes “that visas will be issued for the entire delegation and that the guidelines will be issued”. necessary on the logistical issues of the trip given the sanctions imposed by the United States” in relation to the war in Ukraine.
Last week, the Russian government complained to the United Nations that the United States had not yet granted visas to any of the members of the Russian delegation. The General Assembly meeting will start on September 20 and Russia is expected to speak on the 24th –although the event will end on September 26–.
