Republicans Defend Trump by Attacking the Criminal Justice System

Many Republicans in the US Congress have responded to the impending impeachment of Donald Trump on Tuesday by characterizing the criminal justice system as corrupt, in accusations that parallel earlier criticism of the election after the former president’s 2020 defeat.

Trump and his allies in the House and Senate have used rhetoric that echoed his false claims of widespread voter fraud in the build-up to the deadly January 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol by his supporters.

Critics warn that current partisan rhetoric could undermine public trust in the courts by undermining the institutional legitimacy of the criminal justice system.

“Trump’s impeachment is the culmination of six years in which Democrats weaponized law enforcement to attack and persecute their political enemies. This is how Dictatorships work – America is supposed to be different,” the senator tweeted. Ted Cruz, a Republican who voted to overturn the 2020 election results.

Trump says he is innocent of the expected charges in New York, which revolve around secret money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign. Details of the charges are still unclear.

He says the investigation and three other inquiries involving his attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss and his withholding of classified documents after leaving the White House are politically motivated.
