Taipei () – Mgr Joseph Ti-Kang, archbishop emeritus of the Taiwanese capital, died this morning at the age of 94. Through a surgical examination, the presence of a clot of about three centimeters in his brain was discovered. Due to his advanced age, he was unable to undergo an operation and the doctors were unable to save him.
Archbishop Ti-Kang was born on May 7, 1928 in Xiuwu County, Henan Province, then part of the Republic of China. He was ordained a priest at the Pontifical Roman Catholic University in 1953, and served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of Taipei in 1966. In July 1975 he was appointed Bishop of Kiayi.
On May 3, 1985, Pope John Paul II named him coadjutor archbishop of Taipei, and he assumed leadership of the archdiocese in February 1989. He remained in the position until January 2004. When he retired, after reaching the age limit , the faithful expressed admiration for his workwhich coincided with a period of great political and social changes on the island.
his successor, mons. Joseph Cheng Tsai-fa, passed away on September 2 at the age of 90. Before his pastoral service in the archdiocese of the capital, between 2004 and 2007, he was bishop of Tainan and apostolic administrator of Kinmen and Matsu.
Mgr Ti-Kang was also the president of Fu Jen Catholic University from 1993 to 1999. Once the news of his death circulated, the local Catholic community posted messages on social media, wishing him peace and honoring his memory.
