Follow live the latest news on Iran's attack on Israel
April 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, conveyed this Tuesday to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that Tehran has no interest in an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, after the attack against Israel last weekend in retaliation for the attack on its consulate in Damascus, capital of Syria.
This is extracted from the statement issued by the Kremlin in which it is read that Raisi has explained to Putin that they were “forced” to attack Israeli positions after the deadly attack on their diplomatic facilities in the Syrian capital.
Raisi has stressed that the response has been “limited” and that there is no interest on Iran's part to continue with a further escalation of tensions. For his part, Putin has expressed his interest in both parties showing “moderation” since otherwise the consequences could be “catastrophic” for the region.
The Kremlin has highlighted that both have agreed in pointing out that the current drift of the situation in the Middle East is a consequence of the “unresolved” conflict between Palestinians and Israelis and have called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to advance possible solutions. .
Hours earlier, the Iranian Presidency issued a statement in which Raisi warned that Tehran will respond “fiercely” to “the slightest action” of retaliation by Israel for these weekend attacks, in a conversation with the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
