Putin vows to continue strengthening ties with Xi hours after Trump's inauguration

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, held a video call this Tuesday with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, in which he proposed to continue developing their strategic partnership, a few hours after Donald Trump will be sworn in as the forty-seventh president of the United States.

Putin greeted Xi and addressed the Chinese president as his “dear friend,” saying he wanted to outline “new plans for the development of the Russian-Chinese comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation.”

The Kremlin released a video of their meeting.

“I agree with you that cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is based on a broad coincidence of national interests and views on what relations between great powers should be,” Putin told Xi.

“We build our ties on the basis of friendship, mutual trust and support, equality and mutual benefit. These ties are self-sufficient, independent of internal political factors and the current global situation.”

Russia, waging a NATO-armed war against Ukraine, and China, pressured by a concerted effort by the United States to counter its growing military and economic power, have increasingly found reasons for geopolitical convergence.
