Prominent activist and opposition figure Karim Tabu released under judicial control in Algeria

May 26. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Algerian authorities have released under judicial control the prominent activist and opposition Karim Tabu, leader of the Democratic and Social Union (UDS) party, detained during the day on Wednesday in Delly Brahim, in the capital, Algiers.

“Karim Tabu was released under judicial control,” said the National Committee for the Release of Detainees (CNLD) in a statement on its Facebook social network account, before adding that “the politician is at his home.”

Thus, he has detailed that the opponent appeared on Thursday before a judge in relation to the debate he recently had on a television channel with the former Tunisian president Moncef Marzuki, without further details having been released for the moment.

Tabu’s lawyer, Tufik Belala, who stated that he will soon give “extensive information on the circumstances of the arrest”, after calling the proceedings against the prominent opponent “illegal”.

Tabu has been detained on several occasions since the start in 2019 of the protests against the intention of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika to run for a fifth term despite his serious health problems, which finally led to his resignation in April of that year.

The protests, which also demanded a democratic opening in the African country, have continued after the arrival of Abdelmayid Tebune to the Presidency. Since then, the authorities have made numerous arrests of activists, opponents and journalists, which has provoked criticism from international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
